I used a new can of this on a finished ink painting on paper and it left white dots and residue on the whole thing. I followed the instructions exactly and have used this before with no issues. It ruined my painting.

Bought a brand new can to finish out a painting. It immediately crusted over and ruined the painting. I have used this in the past with no issues, but have had it happen twice. The unpredictability of the quality of this product means I can no longer risk buying this. It's a shame, because when it works, it's amazing. It's just not worth the risk.

I've use this product for years with great results.  (On watercolor painting that are not on traditional watercolor paper, but on rigid metallic Japanese shikishi boards.)  Always spray on a surface that is upright, not flat.  Always shake at least two minutes.  Make a test spray away from the artwork.  Always check to see that the nozzle is clean.  Don't spray another layer until previous layer is dry.  I think high humidity might not be a good think, but I'm not sure on that one as I live in a very dry climate.  I also let the piece dry upright if possible, so fuzz and dog hair doesn't settle on it.  Also don't spray too heavy of a layer and then put it upright, to avoid drip marks.  All that said, I love the product.

I was just reviewing the specs before spraying an oil painting I have spent a lot of time on. I have used this product successfully on another oil painting. The matte surface was just what I wanted and also made it easier to photograph since there is no glare. BUT I also tried it on a few digital prints (on archival rag paper)—per the label—and ruined them. I got the white, speckly film others have made reference to. So, for me, fine for oil paintings, not good for fine art prints.

I’ve been using this on all my photo projects (family photos) and haven’t had to do anything special to get it to work. I shake and spray a light coat, adding 1 or 2 additional light coats a good hour or so apart. No issues. I also store the can in the house where the temp remains pretty constant.

I never had a problem with this product until today. This was a brand new can i purchased a few days ago and stored inside. The spray started coming out in a white foam spray, now my artwork is runied with a weird white residue.

I see a lot of issues but then a couple of things...too many people think they have shaken it enough... it’s like brushing your teeth and the birthday song for your 2 minutes. Come up with something like this or use a timer.  But some mention it worked fine and then didn’t... I find on everything I spray: at the end before recapping and sitting down, immediately turn the can upside  down until it stops spraying, this empties the nozzle and tube, then cap and put away. Also usually after every couple of uses, I throw the nozzles in a jar of ammonia (ammonia is used to strip paint off like old metal door knobs, cover plates, etc), this cleans out excess buildup and then I rinse it with hot water, tap on paper towel and let dry well.  

But also many folks use too many coats at one time. They keep building and building until the varnish can’t dry for months. The top skims over but the underneath can’t get air and the chemicals from the still wet underneath keep the top 
from drying hard. Read the can, check website for the recoat time, sometimes it’s 5 minutes, sometimes 2 hours, sometimes 12-16 and sometimes it’s 24 hours.  Point being —read directions.  But to be safe if I can’t get to anyone and it’s not on the manufacturer website — do a light coat, and wait 2 hours and do another thin coat or wait 24 hours in between. If you have spent months on a project what is a few days over trashing it?  Thin coat means you aren’t covering the entire work totally filled in — it just means you have started with a layer. The second coat will finish filling in and third coat will most likely finish. Trying to put two to four coats on in 5 minutes is asking for trouble.  Now that said, there are products that you have to wait but it’s short due to chemical processes that you can recoat in minutes or so but if you wait say an hour....then you must wait 12-24 hours until the first costs have bonded and dried.  Then you can put more on.  It’s very important to read and check with manufacture — just because the can says paint, varnish, primer, etc doesn’t mean they all work the same.  And I will caution..just cause Joe is your best buddy doesn’t mean he really knows what he’s talking about, same with youtube. Too much “first time trying this” or thise “let’s take a wack at it” those

I’m so sad to read all these reviews saying that they had a lot of trips for spitting during the application. I always spray my canvases in the upright position after shaking the can vigorously for several minutes. I use the gloss and the satin both. Never had any issues

It's the best varnish I've used in a long time. Light, dries evenly and leaves a beautiful finish.
