Fabric Bird Collage: Southern Vintage Wall Art Made from Antique Flour Bags
These birds have a history — the fabrics covering each one were originally Depression-era flour bags. (Yes, flour that you bake with!) Miriam’s grandmother used flour bags in the 1930s to create clothing for her children. Pieces of those flour bags have been handed down through generations and used for crafts. This farmhouse-style bird collage is one of the most recent creations. The foamboard birds are covered in flour bag fabric; they are sitting on a painted papier-mâché branch; and the background is painted burlap. The foundation is a stretched canvas, which is strung with wire for hanging. The full piece is 30" wide, 12" tall.
