Instructions

Step 1:

Find the middle of one paper plate by measuring across from top to bottom and from side to side. Make a light pencil mark, then draw horizontal line across the plate. This line will separate the day scene from the night scene.
TIP: ADULT: If you are working with younger kids, you may need to help with the measuring.

Step 2:

On the first plate, paint one half light blue and the other half black. Set aside to dry.

Step 3:

Take the second paper plate and find the middle as you did in Step 1. This time, after you make a light mark at the center of the plate, measure ½" above the mark and draw your horizontal line across the plate (at that new mark above the middle mark).
TIP: This will make your turning plate.

Step 4:

Cut along line on the second plate. Discard the top half and set the bottom half aside for now.

Step 5:

Now that your first plate is dry, splatter some white paint over the black half to make stars. Just wet your paintbrush with water, add some white paint to the wet brush and make a little puddle on your paint palette. Then use your brush to pick up some of the watery paint and tap the brush against your hand so that the paint splatters onto the sky.
TIP: Make sure you cover the light blue half before splattering with a paper towel or scrap paper.

Step 6:

Paint some white clouds on the blue sky and let dry.

Step 7:

Cut out your scene from construction paper and glue it to your turning (cut) plate. Use the top horizontal edge as your horizon line to attach your scene. Add a yellow moon to the night sky and a yellow sun to the day sky. Be creative and/or use the project shown as a guide.
TIP: The pieces that are on the turning plate will be the same scene that you will view as day or night, as you turn the plate.

Step 8:

On the turning plate, find the original mark you made in the center of the plate. Lay this plate over the painted plate and poke a hole through both plates. Cut a piece of chenille pipe cleaner about 1" [2.5 cm] long and push it through both plates at the mid-mark. Twist the ends of the chenille pipe cleaner above and below the plate to secure the two plates together. Now you can turn the plate to reveal a night scene or a day scene!
